Ever wanted to know what the inside of a secret treasure trove looked like? Visit the antiques market on Northcote Road and you can find out. The TARDIS-like indoor market, which is set out over a couple of levels, is home to a wealth of vintage goods, from antiques, to retro design pieces, to jewellery and much, much more. Be prepared to rummage, be prepared to haggle – but take it from us, it’s worth it.
It’s true, we don’t like Kricket…we love it! That was obvious you may think – hey we love a good dad joke – what wasn’t quite as obvious, however, was just how much we’d freaking love Kricket. Sitting inside of Pop Brixton, the shipping container park, think Boxpark but South and more food-orientated, Kricket serves up Indian sharing plates and cocktails.
It’s casual dinning, yes you are eating in a shipping container, but you’ll be surprised at what comes out of the kitchen. We were bowled over by the bright colours, textures and flavours – think delicate Indian spicing ramped up a level. Created by Will Bowlby, who previously worked at The Cinnamon Club, the dishes are inspired by Southern India but use British ingredients and modern flare to bring them up to date.
We couldn’t fault any of the cooking but the highlight for us was the Goat Leg Rann; cooked for six hours this dish smashed it out of the park. Then there’s the Keralan fried chicken, the wood pigeon with garlic pickle, burnt grelot raita with girolles and the palate-pleasing Bhel Puri with raw mango, tamarind, sev and yogurt.
Forget the bat and ball, sit on the sidelines and plough you way through this menu.
Blue Tit’s sixth salon is at home in Brixton and it was about time we gave it a little visit, because we’re a fan! The first thing we noticed was that the Brixton salon has quite a different interior from all the other salons. You could describe it as Scandinavian minimalism and spacious, inspired by the Berlin nightlife with industrial furniture that fills the space with exposed beams, a lot of metal detailing, open shelving units and fluorescent lighting with a hint of their familiar retro style…but then that would be over the top no?
The staff are super friendly with all the stylists having their own stream of creative and specialty. For our cut and colour we were well looked after, taken through the process and felt right at home. This salon uses all-natural Davines products just like all the others and it smells amazing.
Whether you’re after something quirky or simple anything is possible at Blue Tit Brixton and with smoothies on offer during the day and booze at night, you can make a real occasion of it.
Expect all the usual Caribbean grub alongside some brand spanking new dishes, like the grilled red snapper with mixed pepper escovitch & avocado salsa and a jerk fried chicken burger with spicy lime salt & scotch bonnet mayo on the menu. Living up to its name, the bar will also shake up over 40 cocktails and boast over 200 rums, including the exclusively bottled RK x 25-Year-Old Plantation Rum from Trinidad, so you definitely won’t be going thirsty at this joint.
